Intense bloom off coast of Devon and Cornwall, July 1999
Coccolithophores in the News!
An intense bloom of Emiliania huxleyi
has occured off the coast of Devon and Cornwall in Southwest England.
This unusual event has caused local and national media coverage, featuring
staff of CCMS-PML and satellite images processed in the Remote Sensing Group.
The bloom was sampled on a research vessel from the CCMS Plymouth Marine
Laboratory on 30th July.

The CCMS-PML research vessel Squilla, with Dr Tim Smyth of the Remote
Sensing Group as Principal Investigator, undertook intensive sampling
of the bloom during Friday 30th July.
The NERC aircraft performed coincident aerial remote sensing using
the CASI instrument.
